The New Camoldi Hermitage is a silent Catholic monastery perched two miles above the Big Sur coastline. I have reserved all 9 private retreat rooms for our exclusive use. We will also have use of a sweet meeting room, where we will be able to meditate, talk, and share work.

Our daily schedule
We will begin each day with a check in, followed by a guided meditation designed to help you work on a specific aspect of writing craft, i.e writing from the body, successfully rendering sensory detail, accessing and writing emotion without relying on cliché.

The rest of the day is yours to write, sit in your private garden and contemplate the ocean, or work out that knotty plot problem while walking on one of the nearby trails.
​
We will gather again at the end of the day to check in, and share our work.

You are very welcome to join the resident monks in the lovely, modernist chapel for evening Vespers. Vespers at New Camoldi, which is primarily sung, is an incredibly beautiful experience.
Our accommodations
Each retreat house room contains a desk, a single bed, a dresser, a private half-bath, it's own secluded garden...and an ocean view!

The monks keep our communal kitchen stocked with breakfast makings (including coffee!). Later in the day, they deliver a freshly prepared (and mostly vegetarian) lunch, and fill the fridge with a simple dinner. Each room also has an electric tea kettle, coffee filters, and a single-cup drip to make coffee in your room.
​
There are two communal showers at the entry to the kitchen for our use.
The New Camoldi Hermitage is truly a magical place to work. Peaceful, beautiful, warm and welcoming. It is the perfect environment for diving deeply into your writing and feeding your creativity. This is a rare opportunity to share the space almost exclusively with other writers.
