Class Description

Flashback and backstory can add depth and complexity to any narrative. They're also the easiest techniques to get wrong. Grab a glass of wine (or tea) and join us as we explore the Dos and Don'ts of flashback and backstory. We'll talk about when and where to use them, and when to leave them out altogether. We'll also look at examples from published works to see how the experts do it. This class is suitable for both fiction and memoir writers. Instructor bio: Janis Cooke Newman is the author of ‘Mary; Mrs. A. Lincoln,' which was an LA Times Book Prize Finalist, as well as USA Today's Historical Novel of the Year. She is also the author of 'A Master Plan for Rescue,' which was named a SF Chronicle Best Book of the Year. Her memoir, 'The Russian Word for Snow,' has been translated into several languages.
